Human Immune Hunter

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is, the real Human Immune Hunter can lead to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, or AIDS. According to WHO 2009 report, there are 33.4 million people living with HIV around the world and more than 80000 people are living with HIV in Cambodia. The HIV progressively reduces the effectiveness of the immune system and leaves individuals susceptible to opportunistic infections and tumors. HIV is transmitted through direct contact of a mucous membrane or the bloodstream with a bodily fluid containing HIV, such as blood, semen, vaginal fluid, seminal fluid, and breast milk. This transmission can involve anal, vaginal or oral sex, blood transfusion, contaminated hypodermic needles, exchange between mother and baby during pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding or other exposure to one of the above bodily fluids. Tests used for the diagnosis of HIV infection in a particular person require a high degree of both sensitivity and specificity. The initial test for HIV is ELISA, and then a second test using the Western blot procedure determines the size of the antigens in the test kit binding to the antibodies. The PCR method is the more accurate test for HIV to amplify and detect one or more of several target sequences located in specific HIV genes, such as HIV-I GAG, HIV-II GAG, HIV-env, or the HIV-pol. The current treatment for HIV infection consists of highly active antiretroviral therapy, or HAART. This has been highly beneficial to many HIV-infected individuals. There is currently no available vaccine for HIV and the only known methods of prevention are based on avoiding exposure to the virus.
