Former president of Rotary International visits Sensok IU Hospital

Dr Kenneth E. Collins and his beloved wife paid a visit to International University and Sen Sok International University Hospital on 18 April 2012. The main objective of teh visit to discuss the scope of Rotary International scholarships for the needy students who wish to enroll in a health degree programs at International University, and financial package for women healthcare at Sen Sok IU Hospital. International University Celebrates World Diabetes Day

International university is the only health university in Cambodia that a private hospital is owned to it. The university every focus on world health days and celebrate it like World Tuberculosis day March 23, World HIV/AIDS day Dec 1st, World and World Diabetes day Nov 14.

This year the University with the help of Novo Nordisk Pharma launched a Diabetes courses. Experts from all Cambodia and 6th year medical students were involved in this project. A seminar was held on November 19, 2011 to award certificates to the students and a walk from the university to the hospital was arranged.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

IU Delegation Pays Visit to China 13-17 October 2011

Upon invitation by Jiujiang University Medical Center, Jiujiang City, Jianxi Province, People’s Republic of China, H.E Prof. Dr Sabo Ojano, President, International University with his Personal Assistant and Marketing Director, MrDadariddhEk, paid an official visit to China on 13-17 October 2011.

During the visit, the delegation attended the third international medical symposium, ‘Rural Health Education’ on 15-16 October 2011, chiefly organized by Jiujiang University and sponsored by China Medical Board and Education Society of China Medical Association. The symposium is aimed at gaining inputs for the development of rural medical education to improve the life of the people of rural China beyond as well asrural medical education in particular. Mr DarariddhEk assigned by the President facilitated at the conference a presentation on ‘Health Promotion in Cambodia: Challenges and Commitments’.  The presentation illustrates challenges faced and attempts taken by the Government of Cambodia to promote health care services in rural Cambodia based on the model of two provinces, Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri, located in the far northeastern Cambodia.

In the meantime, the delegation also signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation betweenJiujiang University Medical Center and International University Faculty of Medicines and Pediatrics. The MoU points out the essential areas of cooperation between the two institutions such as:

I.    Joint academic and research activities;
II.    Exchange of staff and faculty training;
III.    Development of joint study programs in medicine,
IV.    Development joint degree programs in medicine
V.    Exchange of academic information, documentation and materials wherever appropriate.
VI.    co-ordination through their respective offices in joint projects
VII.    joint research on scientific and technological subjects
VIII.    Joint scientific and technological meetings, conferences, symposiums and lectures.

The agreement was entered into on 14 October 2011 by President of International University, H.E Prof. Dr. Sabo Ojano and the Associate President of Jiujiang University, Prof. Dr. Yang Yufang at the International Studies Conference Hall, Jujiang University Teaching Hospital. The agreement was followed a brief visit of the delegation to the hospital’s facilities such as students dormitory, imaging department, laboratory, inpatient facilities etc.

On 16 October 2011, the delegation was also invited by the Shanghai Joint Land International Co. Ltd visit Tianhe Pharmaceutical Machinery located on Chongmin Island, Shanghai. This visit is a part of IU Pharmaceutical Factory Project initiated by the late President of International University, Prof. DrUon Sabo, and is being carried out by his single son, H.E Prof. Dr. Sabo Ojano, current president of International University.

The delegation returned home safe and sound on 17 October 2011 with tremendous success in international relation affairs and business initiatives.

International University student Mr. Phirun SAY participated in AASD conference in Beijing China and gets a scholarship of 1000.00 USD

       I.     INTRODUCTION

The Asian Association for the Study of Diabetes (AASD) was launch in Osaka, Japan 2009 with Professor Yutaka Seino as Founding Chairman. The aim of AASD is to promptly improve diabetes treatments and care for Asian diabetes patients. In addition, the association annually hold scientific meeting in different Asian countries and encourage all members to participate and discuss in diabetes field as well as provide a travel grant.

The 3rdAnnual Scientific Meeting of AASD was held from 22 to 24 July 2011 at Beijing International Convention Center, China. All associated members from East to Southeast Asia were invited to participate for 3rd AASD 2011 meeting. The main goal of 3rd AASD meeting is to answer the scientific question “is there an Asian type diabetes” by cross examine the evidence from Asian population and other ethnic groups.

The meeting comprised enormous activities such as useful lectures, scientific programs, oral presentations, posters, exhibitions and social events.

There were numerous key professors related to diabetes filed attending to this meeting such as Professor Jean Claude Mbanya (president of International Diabetes Federation, namely IDF), Professor Yutaka Seino (president of AASD), Professor Richard M. Bergenstal (president of American Diabetes Association), ProfessorLinongJi (president of Chinese Diabetes Society), Professor Sung Woo Park (Korean Diabetes Association), Professor Nam Han Cho, Professor Bong Yun Cha and so on.

1. Theme: The 3rd Scientific Meeting of the Asian Association for the Study Diabetes (AASD)

2. TIME: 5 days, from July 21st – 25th, 2011

3. PLACE:Beijing International Convention Center, Beijing, China

             III. Result

My abstract titled “Chronic renal failure associated with Rhabdomyolysis in Cambodia: a case report” had been selected as an oral presentation in AASD2011. In addition, Organising Committee of AASD2011was provided a travel grant of USD 1000.00 to cover part of expense to attend the meeting.

The 3rd AASD 2011 annual meeting which was held on 22-24 July 2011 at Beijing, China was completely successful celebration.

My presentation was successfully completed and I was admired by chairperson and professor Nam Han Cho. Only a few questions were asked after presentation finished.

1.       Rhabdomyolysis in this case seems to be lead to an acute renal failure. Why did you present (A chronic renal failure associated with Rhabdomyolysis)?

Answer: I said that yeah of course, you are right. it is an acute renal failure which presents on Chronic renal failure.

2.        Does unidentified pain relief injection may cause Rhabdomyolysisi?

Answer: Rhabdomyolysis may be caused by unidentified pain relief injection.

 

The causes of Rhabdomyolysis in this case are still unclear and need more discuss to find out the real causes.

IV. Conclusion

Finally, the conference was lasted up successfully which presided by Professor LinongJi. All the participants were satisfied to the ceremony because it would help the people progress their capacity building when they get back home, so they will conduct the meeting according to this wonderful experience from China.

 

PROFESSOR QUENTIN DURWARD MD NEURO SURGEON CONDUCTED WORKSHOP AT IU

Hospital in Phnom PenhProfessor Durward completed his undergraduate medical degrees in New Zealand.  He undertook postgraduate studies in neurosurgery in Canada, and has resided in the US for the past 27 years.  He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Neurological Sciences and the American Board of Spine Surgery.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada), and the American College of Surgery. He has published a large number of papers on neurosurgery and spinal surgery, and is currently Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Sanford School of Medicine of South Dakota.  Dr Durward also has a large neurosurgery and spinal surgery group practice, operating out of two hospitals in South Dakota and Iowa. 
The renowned neurosurgeons of Cambodia from Sen Sok IU Hospital and other private hospital attended the workshop. The surgeons appreciated the efforts of Prof. Durward by visiting to Cambodia.
 

Seminar on “Complications of Pregnancy”

A seminar on “Complications of Pregnancy” was held on 12th March 2011 at Uon Sabo Conference Hall. Prof. Grace Y. F. Lau MBBS (HK), FHKCOG, FRCOG (UK) was the presenter at the occasion. Currently, she is the professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Sen Sok IU Hospital. Prof. Grace gave a detailed lecture about the subject.

 


 

Other doctors who participated in this seminar were Prof. Paul K. S. Wong MBBS (HK), FHKCP, FRCP (Edin); FRCP (London) Prof. in Internal Medicine & Nephrology and Dr. Abida Rehman who is the  Ante natal and pediatrics specialist at Sen Sok IU Hospital.

Large number of Drs, Students & Staff attended the seminar. Ms. Menchie Magistrado      of International University welcomed the guests and audience in her welcome speech. QB mobile (CADCOMMS) presented a presentation by about their products. The students were very satisfied about the topic and had a discussion at the end of the seminar. Lucky draw of T-shirts was next from QB. Refreshment was offered at the end of seminar.

 

Plastic Surgeon from USA visits Sen Sok IU Hospital for 02 weeks.

Dr. William C. Brender – Plastic Surgeon from USA visited the Sen Sok IU Hospital for 02 weeks and operated voluntarily for patients. He also presented lecture on Wound Closure and Suturing Techniques. Large number of students participates in the seminar. It is to mention that Dr. William is board certified Plastic Surgeon and holds good command of microsurgery. He visits every six months to Cambodia on his own expenses and operates voluntarily for the poor patients free of cost. Any patient interested to contact him kindly call to Dr. Khan 013 926969.
