The emergency department is fully equipped to handle any type of emergency and resuscitation round-the-clock. A triage area with 5 monitored beds functions as the main work area.12 bedded observation ward, minor operation theatre and dressing room. Anesthesiologists are peri operative physicians who provide medical care to patients before, during, and after their surgical procedure. This includes a preoperative medical evaluation of each patient before surgery, consultation and planning of the surgery with the surgical team, creating a plan for the anesthesia tailored to each individual patient, airway management, intra operative life support and provision of pain control, intra operative diagnostic stabilizing and preparing patients for emergency surgery are mandatory, essential, and critical skills of which anesthesiologists have been trained to employ.

The Intensive Care Unit is managed by super-specialists specially trained to meet the requirements of critically ill patients. These doctors are supported by nurses and paramedic staff who man the unit round-the-clock. The hospital boasts of Intensive Medical Care Units (IMCU) Post operative Intensive Care Unit Patients range from those who are critically ill with multiple organ failure requiring intensive monitoring, therapy, and nursing to post-operative patients following cardiac and other major surgery, to stabilizing patients requiring only monitoring. Department of Anesthesiology at SSIUH provides anesthetic services to all types of surgeries carried out at the hospital. During the surgical procedure/operation, the anesthesiologist is solely responsible for monitoring and optimizing the function of the patient's vital organs, mainly heart, lungs and the brain, in addition to providing anesthetic and pain-relief services. The department along with operative assistance also provides Pre and Post-operative pain relief for patients from all specialties in the hospital. After surgery, patients kept in the Intensive Care Unit on respirators are also attended by an anesthesiologist. The department also provides intensive care services to the medical patients admitted in Heart Center/ CCU. The department is ably staffed by highly skilled professionals.
